The Navam Perahara is a colorful and an exotic Sri Lankan festival that compromises of almost 100 elephants, over 5,000 artistes with dancers, acrobats, drummers, torch bearers and many more other attractions. The Nawam Maha Perahera is officially inaugurated when the sacred relics are paraded in a gilded casket placed on a majestic tusker, which is elegantly caparisoned and walks calmly amidst the hive of activity. The Navam perahera festival in Colombo draws tourists and visitors from across the country, and many foreigners from all over the world come and visit the Navam Perahara. The Navam Perahara is held at the very famous and sacred gangaramaya temple at in Colombo. The Navam Perahara hosts hundreds of colorfully decked elephants parading the show on a full moon in February. Many Elephants, dancers and musicians takes to the streets during this grand and pompous parade through two nights. This procession is planned by gangaramaya temple overlooking the banks of the picturesque beira lake at hunupitiya. This festival in Colombo was initiated in 1979 and hundreds of visitors flock to this temple every year since then to look at the amazing sight of herds of elephants walking down the road in their best of bright and pompous fineries festival of color, fun and excitement speaks a lot about the local fervor and traditions of music.
